Why I Wrote This Book

Grandmothers
My two beautiful grandmothers, Rose Silinsky Cook and Beatrice Mendelsohn Ackerman.

This is personal: my mother and sister are breast cancer survivors, I’m high-risk and have been through biopsies, surgeries, examinations, scans, genetic testing and counseling. My grandmothers, may they rest in peace and power, were two of the best friends and mentors I have ever had. I have two grown daughters whose wellness means everything to me.

This is professional: I have trained my whole life for this. First as a lawyer, then as a women's health advocate. This is my life's work.

When Women Get Sick will help you navigate the complex waters of the American healthcare system and workplace. Not to mention the insurance and benefits industrial complex. If you're facing cancer, heart disease, an autoimmune disease or other serious illness, I want to walk with you and the people who love and support you. I know how complicated this gets and I want to share what I have learned.

Using the power of women’s stories and my experience of 26 years in-the-trenches advocating for women when they get sick, When Women Get Sick guides you with examples, questions and useful information —all derived from the experiences of real women fighting-the-fight. It’s an organized framework for thinking about a “clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right” situation; the messy mix of the healthcare provider system, third party payers, employers, and slow-as-molasses government entities. There’s enough stress and fear surrounding cancer and other serious illnesses—the medical part is hard enough, but these non-medical aspects freak women out too and I know why! I want you and the people who love you to have the tools to make the best decisions. When you're dealing with so much, I want you to have the comfort of knowing you're not alone and the power that only knowledge can give you.

I wish I could personally advocate for every woman as she faces cancer or another serious illness, both in the health space and the workplace.

That’s why I wrote this book.

Check back for more posts sharing stories and information. When Women Get Sick is written and will be out in July 2025, but the work goes on! Please share my site with any woman who needs it. I'm here to help.
